Life
By Harold Heard
Life is made up of ordinary moments that rarely seem important while we are living them. A conversation at the kitchen table, a family trip, an unexpected laugh, a difficult day we somehow get through together. Those moments become the story of a life. Too often, we wait for a milestone to appreciate what is already in front of us.
Being present may be one of the greatest gifts we can give the people we love. Say what needs to be said. Make the call. Sit a little longer. Listen carefully. We never know which ordinary moment will later become one of the memories we treasure most.
Health
By Harold Heard
Health has a way of changing how we see everything else. When the body is working as expected, it can be easy to take it for granted. Illness reminds us how connected our physical health is to our emotions, our relationships, our faith, and the way we experience each day.
Taking care of ourselves is not simply about avoiding sickness. It is about paying attention, asking questions, seeking good care, and recognizing when our bodies are telling us something. Health can bring uncertainty, but it can also teach us gratitude, patience, compassion, and a deeper appreciation for each day we are given.
Family
By Harold Heard
Family is rarely perfect, but it is where so much of life happens. It is where we learn to love, forgive, disagree, laugh, support one another, and keep showing up. The strongest families are not the ones without difficult moments. They are the ones that continue choosing one another through them.
Time with family can feel routine until we realize how quickly the years have passed. Children grow up. Traditions change. Chairs around the table eventually look different. That is why the moments we have together now deserve our attention. Love your family intentionally, and make sure they know what they mean to you.
Prayer
By Harold Heard
Prayer does not always have to be eloquent. Sometimes it is gratitude. Sometimes it is a request for help. Sometimes it is simply sitting quietly and admitting, "God, I do not understand." Faith is not measured by whether we always have the right words.
Some of the most honest prayers happen when life does not make sense. We can bring God our confidence and our uncertainty, our joy and our grief, our hope and our fear. Prayer creates room for us to be honest about what we are carrying while trusting that we do not have to carry it alone.
Books
By Harold Heard
Books allow a person's thoughts to travel farther than the moment in which they were written. They preserve questions, experiences, lessons, and perspectives that might otherwise disappear. Sindy's writing gives us an opportunity to continue hearing her voice and exploring the subjects that mattered deeply to her.
We will begin with Research Me, God, Body, and Illness, a work that brings together some of life's most difficult subjects: faith, the human body, health, illness, fear, and hope. In future issues of Being Heard, we will explore the book more deeply, one idea at a time, and consider what those questions may still have to teach us today.
